Objectives of the project: 

The PRRO aims to achieve the following objectives, save lives and protect livelihoods of refugees, returnees and relief victims, improve productive capacities in returnee and refugee host communities including addressing the effects of environmental degradation, reduced acute malnutrition of children under 5, meet the food and nutrition needs of and PLHIV and strengthen ownership, coordination and management of food assistance by government counterparts at national and decentralized structures. Contribute to increased incomes and local production of small-scale farmers linked to the Purchase for Progress (P4P) initiative

54,000 Refugees in three camps of Nyabiheke, Kiziba and Gihembe are being supported and food distribution is going on.
 
10,000 Rwandan Returnees mainly from Democratic Republic of Congo are being helped and receive three months food ration to help them. Each month over 700 Rwandan returnees are helped.
 
10,000 Peoplein Relief and Recovery are targeted to be assisted especially people affected by emergencies.
 
Supplementary feeding Provide supplementary food to:
 
  1. Pregnant and lactating women,

 

  1. Children aged from 6-59 months,

 

  1. People living with HIV/AIDS  and on antiretroviral treatments (ART).

 
 

20,000 Pregnant and lactating women are being helped to get supplementary food through nutrition centers.
 
25000 Children aged 6-59 Months get Supplementary Food to avoid malnutrition
10,000 People living with HIV/AIDS and on antiretroviral treatments (ART) are being helped by providing supplementary food.
School feeding Provide daily hot lunch to:
 
  1. Primary school children in 300 schools including 9 years basic education.
350,000 Primary school Children from 300 schools including 9 year basic education are being assisted to eat hot lunch.
Food for Work Provide food for Work:
 
People involved in Food for work/Asset (FFW/A) activities get food.
60,000 beneficiaries are being targeted in 2010, however no food for work activities going on due to budget constraints, fund mobilization is going on.
Training in:
  1. Nutrition,
  2.  HIV/AIDS,
  3. Warehouse and commodity management “Postharvest storage and handling skills”,
  4. Vulnerability assessment in food security and monitoring.
Trainings Carried out to WFP beneficiaries including small farmers. 162 farmers trained, 73 people trained in Vulnerability assessment in food security and monitoring.
Training of 140 people is under way.
Purchase for Progress (P4P) WFP buy food direct from small farmers in Rwanda and distribute to the beneficiaries in the Country. WFP has purchased 3,300 Metric tones of food (maize and beans) from small farmers in Rwanda worth over 350 Million Rwanda Francs (USD $ 600,000). 14000 people have benefited through 10 cooperatives and two farmers unions.
